Whatever music it was that first sparked you or your child’s interest in the sax, chances are that it wasn’t simplistic nursery rhymes or boring exercises.

Unfortunately, these types of tunes are precisely what you find in the vast majority of beginner saxophone practice books.

While it may seem that these types of songs are necessary for learning the basics of the instrument, they’re actually slowing down you or your child’s progress.

After decades spent taking students of all ages from beginners to outstanding players, I can tell you one thing for sure

Playing music that excites and inspires you is the faster way to build foundational skills.

Striking a Balance Between Fundamentals and Fun

At the end of the day, the primary goal of a beginning saxophonist practice book is to get you:

  • Fluent with the fingerings for all the notes on the instrument
  • Reading music
  • Strengthening the embouchure
  • Improving articulation and use of dynamics
  • Developing understanding of rhythm
  • Using techniques such as trills and tremolos
  • Learning basic music theory

But none of that is going to happen if practicing starts feeling like a chore.

And likewise, the discouragement that comes from attempting to tackle music that’s not suited towards beginners is also going to stop progress dead in its tracks.

A New Pathway to Sounding Great Sooner and Staying Motivated

After seeing that the books typically found at the top of a search on Amazon.com were driving many students into that proverbial wall of de-motivation, I developed my own program of learning material that would:

  • Teach ALL of the fundamentals found in the top-selling beginner sax books.
  • Provide unmistakably superior outcomes by harnessing the passion and excitement that first drew the student to the instrument.

Based on the incredible success of this approach, I created Fun and Modern Tunes for Beginner Saxophonists.

"Having taught saxophone for over 25 years, Dan's book brings a fresh and exciting approach to teaching beginner students. He has made the music relatable to young students while teaching them the key fundamentals of saxophone. It is definitely a book all saxophone teachers should use."

- Marc de Kock, Saxophone Educator at Rondebosch Boys High School, Cape Town, South Africa.

More Than Just A Practice Book...

This is a complete musical learning program that includes...

E-Book with the Sheet Music for 25 Tunes

  • Each tune is written in a modern style of music that’s rarely, if ever, included in a saxophone method book for beginners.
  • Tunes are ordered by level of difficulty, and "secretly" drill you in the most important fundamentals (sort of like hiding veggies in a delicious chocolate cake).
  • E-book is downloadable in an easily readable and printable PDF format.
  • Also embedded on the website so that you can clearly view the sheet music in "full screen" mode on any device - with nothing to install or download.

Demonstration and Backing Tracks

All audio tracks are transposed to make it easy to play along - regardless of whether you play alto, tenor, baritone, or soprano sax

Demonstration Track Examples

  • For each song, there's a recording of me playing each tune over a backing track to eliminate any guesswork when it comes to knowing exactly what the “end result” is supposed to sound like.

Backing Track Examples

  • Each tune is also accompanied by the backing track in the demonstration.

A Video Lesson for Each of the 25 Tracks

Here is a quick montage of just a few excerpts from the 25 videos I decided to add in order to make sure you are able to digest 100% of the fundamentals taught in each of the songs.

Frequently Asked Questions

When you say, "beginner saxophonists", what does that mean?

As long as you know how to assemble the saxophone (reed, mouthpiece, and neck) and produce some sort of sound, you can benefit tremendously from this course. So this is not a "How to Play the Saxophone from Day 1"-type of course - but more like a 'How to Play Saxophone from Day 7"-type of course.

The tunes are ordered by increasing levels of difficulty, starting with a tune that consists of just 3 notes. From there, we take you on a fun and exciting, step-by-step journey that culminates in a tune featuring a melody and chord progression that would put you squarely in the category of "advanced beginner" or even intermediate saxophonist.

Aren't there apps that already give you fun and modern tunes to play along with?

Sure, but those apps serve a very different purpose than this course.

This course is a step-by-step learning program that gives you the specific fundamental skills you need to get comfortable playing whatever it is you'd like to play - whether you're playing along with an app, or better yet, a live band. In a nutshell, "Fun and Modern Tunes..." provides the best of both worlds.

How long do I have access to the course?

How does lifetime access sound? This is not a subscription, so you only pay once. After purchasing, you have unlimited access for as long as you like - across any and all devices you own.

I'm not really good with computers - will I be able to use this without wanting to pull my hair out?

If you're tech-savvy enough to check your email, then you're tech-savvy enough to use this program. It’s just a matter of logging into a website on any device (computer, tablet, or smartphone), and all of the videos are right there onscreen. No downloading or installing apps or any nonsense like that. And if you get stuck for any reason, just reach out and someone will help you right away!
